The last 48 hours had been a little nerve-racking because we received no communication from Curt and Zoe. The last message we had received was on Monday at 6:02 am (Arizona). I started to worry because I knew that the closer they got to base camp the conditions would become more perilous. As the hours ticked by with no update I started to think about avalanches, altitude sickness and all sorts of other dangers.
I’m happy to say that at 6:37 am (Arizona) we finally received a message!
Lobuche to Gorakshep and Everest Base Camp, EBC to Gorekshep
Altitude: 16,994ft (Gorakshep) & 17,598 (EBC)
Trekking distance: 15km (8 hours)
This was the BIG DAY as the group would finally make it to Everest Base Camp! The initial trek started off relatively easy from Lobuche to Gorekshep. The subsequent, straight trail to Everest Base Camp would be harder, involving rocky dunes and moraine, formed accumulation of unconsolidated glacial debris. On the way to the destination the group would approach the famed Khumbu Glacier and icefall, located on the slope of Everest. As the afternoon sunset started to fade the group made their way back to Gorekshep for rest.
“Sorry no cell service or WiFi”
“We made it to base camp!!! Yeah!!”
“Long day. Almost 8 hours today with an hour lunch break. We had great view this morning before we left but then the clouds came in. It was sunny until lunch. We trekked about 2.5 hours this morning, left an hour earlier than normal. We were on the trail at 7:45 am then made it to our tea house / lodge. It was a little tough as the air continues to get thinner. We made it then we ate lunch. It started to rain and it got pretty cold.. we all layered up in clothes and headed out to base camp which was 2.5 hour hike. It rained a lot of the time. The glacier we hiked along was amazing. You could hear avalanches echoing off the mountains.. then we made it!!!”
“Took lots of photos. We were all very excited! Unfortunately Everest was clouded in but we didn’t let that damper our spirits because we had just accomplished an amazing 8 day trek to base camp!!”
“We got back to the lodge/ tea house at 4:30 pm ate dinner and made some new friends. We are waking up tomorrow at 3 am, if clear then we are hiking to about 18,500 feet to the best view spot around. It’s a very steep hike. Then we will start the 3 day trek down.”
“I will ask Zoe tomorrow who won it was super close today Today was a 6 out of 10!!”
“It’s 7:44 and I’m exhausted heading to bed!!”
“Miss all of you”
“Noah and MeiLi, we hung the prayer flag at base camp and took lots of photos!! “Miss you all !!”
